Pupils under the DESED project
DESED-DELAYED SEXUAL DEBUT PROJECT.
The delay of sexual debut by the young people has proven to be an important method in HIV prevention. Youth have a right to information, education and services that could protect them from harm including HIV/AIDS and other STIs.
ZHECT under Local Partners Capacity Building Program(LPCB) came up with the initiative to implement this project in the schools, targeting youths aged 10-19 years (grade 5- 12 approx.).While there have been messages of ‘abstinence’ and or emphasis on ‘condom use', the DESED project is different, it is a largely Interpersonal Communication Project in nature and focuses on the vital aspect of delaying sexual debut as long as possible.
ZHECT is conducting its interventions in three districts of Zambia: Lusaka, Kafue and Mumbwa. A total of thirteen schools among the three districts have been identified.
Project Goal: To contribute to the reduction of new HIV infections among the Zambian youth.
Objective 1:To build capacity of 40 teacher champions and 120 peer educators from schools in delaying sexual debut interventions by December 2011.
Objective 2: Empower 6,000 people in schools and surrounding communities with messages and skills promoting delaying sexual debut HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention methods by December 2011.
Objective 3: Provide comprehensive HIV Counseling and Testing to at least 6,000 people during the period of January 2011 to December 2011.
